Publisher's Synopsis

This publication includes all the sheets from Leonardo da Vinci's Anatomical Manuscript A, compiled in the winter of 1510/11, reportedly in collaboration with Marcantonio della Torre, professor of anatomy at the university of Pavia. The drawings were based on extensive human disection and concentrate on the musculoskeletal systems of the human body. This is the only group of Leonardo's anatomical drawings in which he attained something approaching complete coverage of the human form, and is his finest set of anatomical illustrations. The drawings are heavily annotated in Leonardo's distinctive 'mirror-writing', with explanations of the drawings, notes on related anatomical matters, memoranda and so on. This groundbreaking publication illustrates the original drawings full scale alongside a second reproduction with translations in place of Leonardo's blocks of notes. In this way Leonardo's thinking behind these beautiful drawings becomes instantly comprehensive to both the general and specialist reader.
