But whilst thus in some measure obliged to go over matters that may be repulsive to many, I am aware that I have dismissed some of them in a cursory manner. I have not done them full justice, when compared with the treatment which they ordinarily receive in the hands of our continental scholarship. I fear, however, that I may be even thought by some, to have dwelt too long on mat ters whose value none but the accomplished critic can fully know.
