The Meaning of Digestion Animal bodies can only utilize as food the three classes of complex substances which constitute their own tissues. These substances are carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The animal body can only obtain them by eating them. In the form in which they exist in other animal bodies or as they are prepared by plant life. Moreover, the body can absorb and utilize after absorption, only a few of the many carbohydrates and fats.
