Publisher's Synopsis

This is an analysis of the chief elements of Latin syntax written from the perspective of contemporary linguistic theory. This means that those elements are dealt with which can be understood or described better by combining the contributions of traditional philologically-based descriptions with the insights of recent descriptive or theoretical studies.;The author adopts some aspects of the theory of functional grammar as developed by Simon Dik, which means that not only syntactic aspects of language receive attention, but semantic and pragmatic aspects as well. The description is mainly synchronic and examples are taken from classical authors, notably Cicero.
