NAZARETH--Still going northward we come to Nazareth, the scene of the Annunciation, and where the childhood and early manhood of our Lord was spent; where "he increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man." It is beautifully situated on the western side of one of the loveliest valleys in Syria, surrounded by beautiful fields, gardens, and orchards. A Latin convent here contains the Church of the Annunciation, and the house of Joseph and Mary. The kitchen, parlor, and bedroom of the Virgin are shown, and the precise spot on which the angel and Mary stood at the moment of the Annunciation. No. 40. TYRE--The great city of Tyre, which is so eloquently and magnificently described by Ezekiel in his prophecy, chapters 27 and 28, is now represented by an insignificant village. Many efforts have been made to revive it, but with little success. The circumstances that made ancient Tyre what it was do not now exist. It was founded twentyseven hundred years before the Christian era, and is probably one of the most ancient cities of the world. Its king, Hiram, and Solomon, were very good friends. Not very far from the city are the wells of Solomon, and the ancient aqueduct for conveying water to the city. Now, however, the natives have to buy their water supply. No. 41. A WATER SELLER AT TYRE.--In old times "the merchants of Tyre were princes, and her traffickers the honorable of the earth;" such is far from the case at present.
