Les anciennes chansons, manuscrites ou imprimees, ont generalement l'indication du timbre (air) sur lequel elles ont ete composees, parfois il y a meme plusieurs timbres au choix, ce qui deroute le chercheur, car ces themes indiques n'ont pas toujours la meme mesure rythmique ou la meme coupe de vers.
Il y a encore une autre difficulte pour retrouver un ancien air, c'est que cet air ou melodie originale, apres avoir vecu pendant des annees avec un texte primitif, de nouvelles paroles ecrites sur ce meme air, et ayant eu le bonheur de plaire, viennent rompre cette ancienne liaison les nouvelles paroles remplacent les anciennes_ qui disparaissent completement. L'air ayant survecu est designe par le premier vers du texte nouveau, qui devient son timbre.
