Inscribed by the author on the half-title: ' Hippolyte Fournier, son dvou confrre, Emile Zola'. The recipient was an influential literary critic, for the conservative newspaper 'La Patrie', who reviewed Zola's work notably 'Germinal', which he compared with the work of Shakespeare and Dante. The seventh volume in the author's Les Rougon-Macquart cycle, and a notable success as the abundance of printings following the first edition of 1877 would suggest.
