The grid has rectangular spaces to represent the actual shape of knitting stitches. The 4:5 ratio means the length of 4 stitches measure the same as the height of 5 rows (40 stitches = 50 rows). This 4:5 ratio knitting graph paper is used for most yarn types and designing projects (use a 2:3 ratio paper for designs with oversized or thick yarns).
