The ocean has always been both life and death to Kai-it feeds his coastal town, but it also stole his father years ago. Now, the ocean is dying. Fish vanish, coral bleaches white, and Kai's grandmother withers from a sickness no healer can cure. When elders speak of the Golden Murex, a sacred shell rumored to command the tides and cure all illness, Kai sets sail on his patched-up dinghy with Mira, a girl from his village, and Cuckoo, his mad cockatoo. Together, they embark on a perilous journey to find the Golden shell.
