Publisher's Synopsis

The confrontation of the political blocs after 1945 had considerable effects for decades, not least on the youth, their forms of communalization and organization. In the East and West, until perestroika at the end of the 1980s, young people belonged to a hotly contested group that received considerable political attention as part of the rivalry between systems. The leisure life of young people also changed under the increasing influence of mass culture. At the same time, since the 1960s, young people established new forms of protest within international protest, Easter march and peace movements. As a result of these new constellations, the offers of the youth movement and the traditional political and denominational youth organizations lost their attraction. What this meant for young people, youth groups, youth movements and youth cultures in both German states is the subject of this book, which thus makes a contribution to the history of German-German integration.
