Publisher's Synopsis
When Mark Twain wrote this novel he left us with one of the great puzzles in literature, one of the most mysterious literary cases: a religious skeptic surrendering to a very unique saint. The story begins with Juana, a simple peasant woman in the quiet village of Domremy. France has been torn apart by the bloody Hundred Years War with England. Charles VII, the legitimate King of France, remains immobile and influenced by a corrupt court. But God has a plan for Juana and a plan for France. Led by what she calls her "Voices" - miraculous visions and instructions from Saint Michael and other saints - Juana presents herself to the king with the message that God has sent her to save France. And France begins to wake up. Over and over again, the English armies are defeated by Juana. One by one, the English fortifications fall. The oppressed peoples of France have hope again and God fights the English invaders through the sword of a young girl in dazzling armor.
