It has been attempted to use as evidence only those judgments about the nature of variants (for instance, in deciding whether a partie ular reading should be regarded as a deliberate emendation, or as an error, or as probably the true reading) which would seem likely to commend themselves to any scholar, and to treat doubtful matters as doubtful.
