Nowhere does it stand written that only an Englishman can suitably write the history of Eng land or a portion of it. It may easily happen that a German may have access to sources of English history from which the Englishman may have less opportunity to draw. It is from such sources that I believe myself able to offer not a little which may serve to supple ment and enrich, and even to correct, the knowledge which has hitherto been current respecting the history and the characteristic genius of Wiclif.
