This study of a Third World urban slum and its inhabitants examines the living conditions and environment of the slum dwellers and their access to paid employment. It explores the relationship between the levels of income of slum dwellers and their physical health and analyzes existing schemes in co-operation with local government to improve health and the competence of slum households. It also examines projects designed to develop small-scale opportunities for the poorest workers.
