Publisher's Synopsis

In Zurich in 1918 and 1919, the English painter Frank Budgen and Joyce met almost daily to walk, talk and drink wine. During these meetings they discussed "Ulysses", the novel Joyce was then writing. This book is a record of these conversations and a critical commentary on the work itself. It is reissued in its original form, together with the author's essay of 1939-41 on "Finnegans Wake", his obituary of Joyce and his "Further Recollections" of 1955. In his introduction the Joyce scholar Clive Hart draws on unpublished material to trace the history of the book and pays a personal tribute to Budgen.
