Während von der Bibliothek des Papstes Bonifaz VIII. Nur einzelne Bande in die päpstliche Bibliothek zu Rom übergingen, so wuchs diese trotzdem im Laufe des 15. Jahrhunderts in schnellem Marse. Unter Papst Eugen IV. Zählte sie nur 340 Bände, darunter zwei griechische, im Jahre 1455 beim Tode Nikolaus V. Bereits 1160, worunter 353 grie chische, und 1484 beim Tode Sixtus IV. Ungefähr 3650, wovon vielleicht 1000 griechisch waren.
