Ivan lost his father to an accident on his eighth birthday and is feeling quite alone. His mother is still there, but she isn't "really" present for him. Other than his best buddy Pauley, Ivan feels all alone in the world. Everything about being eight is seriously irritating, including both school and home life. It is only after his mother gives him the gift of a seemingly boring, broken, plastic wiener dog, that everything changes.
