Publisher's Synopsis

Iolanthe Or The Peer And The Peri is a comic opera written by William Schwenck Gilbert and first published in 1882. The story follows the fairy Iolanthe, who has been banished from fairyland for marrying a mortal. She returns to the mortal world to find that her husband has become a member of the House of Lords, and their son, Strephon, is in love with the Lord Chancellor's ward, Phyllis. However, the Lord Chancellor forbids the marriage, and chaos ensues as the fairies and mortals clash. The opera is known for its witty dialogue, catchy songs, and satirical commentary on British politics and society. It has been performed numerous times and remains a popular work in the Gilbert and Sullivan canon. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
