It is a curious fact that the cultivation of the most refined and poetic of the arts in America should have its origin with the stern and prosaic Pilgrims and Puritans of the early days. And yet it is in that for bidding soil that we have to recognize the root of Ameri can musical etl'ort, which has today grown to such fair and noble proportions. True, their musical activity, and it is but a formula of words to call it such, was confined to psalmody alone, and it was directed by religious rather than by art impulses; but it was none the less the origin from which we have to trace the musical history of our country.
