All these considerations have led to the following deviations from Professor Paul's work.
Everything has been illustrated from English wherever possible, and much also from French; examples from other foreign languages have, ' as a rule, been admitted only when they illustrated some thing new, and even then an attempt has generally been made to add such translations (literal and idiomatic) as would enable the reader to appreciate the force of the illustration, even without further knowledge of the language from which it was taken.
