Cancer research draws on a wide range of disciplines, each with its own specialized techniques and view of the processes involved in carcinogenesis, the development and spread of cancer, and methods of control and treatment. Scientists entering the field often do not have a broad knowledge of the biology of cancer, and students sometimes cover cancer only briefly in their courses. With their needs in view, this book aims to provide a general survey of the whole field of cancer research. After a general introduction describing the pathology and natural history of disease, each section gives a detailed summary of its particular area, concentrating on principles and providing a list for further reading. Every topic is discussed by authors active in the field. This expert information is pitched at a non-expert level, however, and the book should give a wider understanding of the practical problems of cancer treatment and research.
