With the increasing integration of office-automation functions, there is a growing requirement for standards to allow the effective transmission of messages between different facilities and items of equipment.;This booklet provides a basic introduction to X400, a series of recommendations based on Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) and produced by CCITT, the body responsible for setting standards for the implementation and interconnection of message-handling systems.;Specific X400 recommendations are listed and defined, and an indication is given of the relevance of X400 to the OSI model. Basic and optional facilities are indicated, and applications details are also included.;A central aim of X400 is to encourage (and enable) the integration of existing messaging systems. British Telecom and other companies are already implementing X400 recommendations.
