The principles of the techniques were discovered over twenty years ago, and the first chapters discuss classic work on giant nerve and muscle fibres. However, the book compares and contrasts work on many different types of excitory cell, including isolated nerve cells and oocytes. New data are presented concerning the excitability of the somatic neural membrane. The final chapters analyse some common methodological problems, such as the isolation of cells from surrounding tissue and how to obtain reliable electrical measurements from perfused cell membranes.
