Publisher's Synopsis
Interrogation and Confession looks closely at the interrogation process as it currently operates and compares this with its operation in the period before the introduction of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE). The book is concerned with the nature of police-suspect encounters during interrogation. The primary focus is upon the status of official records of police interviews with persons suspected of involvement in crime. The study goes on to examine: the extent to which evidence is constructed rather than elicited; how far PACE has affected the character and form of police-suspect relations within the interrogation process; the circumstances in which suspects elect to cooperate with the police; and the extent to which records of interrogation can be said to be complete, accurate and reliable. -
