Publisher's Synopsis
The problem of representing and using world or domain knowledge is a major obstacle to the development of computer programs capable of sophisticated natural language processing. This book tackles an important aspect of the language processing problem, that of interpreting anaphors (pronouns and other abbreviated references) by means of a "shallow processing" approach in which other linguistic knowledge is thoroughly exploited in order to minimize reliance on world knowledge.;The ideas reported are implemented in a program known as SPAR (Shallow Processing Anaphor Resolver) which is capable of resolving anaphoric and other linguistic ambiguities, and generating paraphrases to show what interpretations it has selected.
