The first requirement of this review was to provide a comprehensive statement of the overall chemical composition of the various components of cement pastes, mortars and concretes. Secondly, an assessment of the possibilities of transfer species from the cement-based material to the water supply was required. Thirdly, a consideration of the influence of the changes that have taken place in composition of blended cements and the production processes for Portland cement clinker on the release of species from cement-based products was included.
