In 2012, Charles Taylor was charged with 11 specific war crimes and crimes against humanity, committed from 1996 to 2002 during Sierra Leone's civil war. Including the attacks on Kono and Makeni (well-known diamond regions) and Freetown in late 1998 and early 1999, Taylor was found guilty of the following crimes: five counts of war crimes (terrorizing civilians, murder, outrages on personal dignity, cruel treatment, and looting); five counts of crimes against humanity (murder, rape, sexual slavery, mutilating/beating, and enslavement); and one count of other serious violations of international humanitarian law (recruiting and using child soldiers). Taylor has been serving out his sentence in the UK since October 15, 2013.
