The "Hematology Reviews" series focuses on key developments in fundamental and applied haematological research and are intended to make medical advances in the former Soviet Union readily accessible to the researcher who does not read Russian. In Part 3, contributors describe the main lines of the development of technical means designed for gravisurgical treatment of blood and for its extracorporeal purification. The authors also review the technical apparatus and devices that are currently available and emphasize that it is necessary to create combined apparatus to match the individual treatment regimens and requirements of the patient.;There is also a report on the use of splenic artery embolixation in patients with blood disease in whom splenectomy is associated with a high surgical risk. The authors report on a group of 70 patients and conclude from a clinical viewpoint that splenic artery embolization is as effective as splenectomy and avoids the complications associated with splenectomy.
