Publisher's Synopsis
The "Hematology Reviews" series focuses on key developments in fundamental and applied haematological research. The series is intended to make medical advances in the former Soviet Union readily accessible to the researcher who does not read Russian.;In Volume 5, Part 1, the authors report that therapeutic cytapheresis as part of treatment in patients with chronic lymphoid leukemia, chronic myelocytic leukemia and acute leukemia result in an improvement in clinical and haemopoletic parameters.;A contribution on the state of haemocoagulation in leukemic patients during gravisurgical blood treatment, describes a study of 15 patients with acute leukemias and 22 patients with chronic leukemias. The coagulation activity of blood was studied before and after a course of leukocytapheresis. Each patient with acute leukemia was subjected to one to three leukocytapheresis procedures, and each patient with chronic leukemia to one to five procedures. Following each leukopheresis procedure the haemostatic potentials of blood were significantly reduced. The observed alterations in haemostatic potentials were shown to be identical in both groups of patients.;Finally, two authors present data concerning the treatment of multiple myeloma and compare this data with those of other researchers. The introduction of chemotherapy has increased patients' survival time by a factor of three. In addition to chemotherapy, the authors have used plasmapheresis extensively which results in an improvement in the condition of the patients.
