Publisher's Synopsis

This book is the proceedings of Falk Symposium 91 (III International Falk Symposium on Pediatric Gastroenterology), held in Basel, Switzerland, March 22-23, 1996. This was the third symposium held in Basel that was dedicated to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) associated with children, and focused on both the immunological aspect of IBD and the traditional and novel treatments of the disease.
Additionally, recurrent abdominal pain and children was considered. A significant proportion of outpatient consultations of paediatricians and paediatric surgeons is associated with recurrent abdominal pain. There is at present some evidence that suggests that the pain may be caused by spasmodic contraction of some region of the intestine. The children more often are characteristically rather anxious, dependent and timid. The diagnosis and treatment of this enigmatic disease are addressed by paediatricians and surgeons.
This book unites scientists and clinicians in a lively interdisciplinary exchange of ideas.
