In the 1970s, gurus from India flocked to North America and millions of young minds became mesmerized by Oriental wisdom. The word enlightenment turned into a buzzword referring to higher states of consciousness attributed to saints and great spiritual teachers. Swept along by the movement of transcendentalism and consciousness expansion, Sophie and Thomas became attracted to a guru who believed that sexuality is a vehicle for spiritual enlightenment. Such a notion in the era of "free love" captured their fancy and they joined the ashram; and after they became disciples of Baja Gopi, their lives changed forever. Baja Gopi came from India with teachings about enlightenment and love. He talked about an energy that might open the gates to something divine, and Sophie and Thomas were willing to experiment with such a vision of sexual love. They did indeed find love, but they also discovered hate. The guru's intent was sincere, but his hands-on experimentation led to a series of sinister events-including murder. But when the peaceful fabric of the ashram began to fall apart, they entered into a drama meant only for the gods.
