Residents of Northern Virginia played an instrumental role in the American Revolution. Fairfax County native, George Mason drafted Virginia's first boycott plan in 1769, and later drafted Virginia's first constitution and bill of rights. Prince William County residents were the first to adopt county resolves in support of Boston when martial law was imposed on Massachusetts in 1774. The residents of Loudoun and Fairfax Counties passed similar resolves soon after. Fairfax County stepped to the forefront of the dispute with Britain by forming Virginia's first independent militia company in September 1774. Volunteers from Prince William and Loudoun formed similar companies a few weeks later.
