This collection of papers was presented at the 1995 TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada, February 12-16, 1995. The volume addresses the topic of in situ processed advanced materials from the standpoint of the processing approach, the material systems, and the resulting physical properties. Processing procedures for metal-metal, ceramic-metal, reduction of oxides, metal-gas, metal-intermetallic and ceramic-gas interactions that lead to in situ-produced reinforcements or new phases are discussed.;The papers are organized into the following topics: shock- and strain-related effects; in situ synthesis of composites; combustion synthesis and densification; in situ synthesis of ceramic systems; and in situ synthesis of intermetallic systems.
