Publisher's Synopsis
This book is the second in a series of two dealing with the UK's Data Protection Act. The first, Guide to the Data Protection Act, was published in August 1984 and dealt with the purpose of the Act and its requirements. This second publication addresses the question of how the data user or computer bureau will fulfil these requirements.;Familiarity with the Guide is not assumed. This book can be read by itself. However for some aspects, particularly details of exemptions, the Guide is recommended as additional reading.;This book deals chiefly with the practical aspects of the subject. It does not set out to distinguish fine points of law or to clarify the working of the law for every obscure combination of data, equipment and users. It is concerned chiefly with 'rules of thumb' that will apply in the majority of circumstances. People who wish for a more legal understanding of the law are recommended to study the Act itself. All users of computers should become familiar with the guidelines issued by the Registrar.;Generally, the terms used will follow the definitions in the Data Protection Act. This will be true of the terms 'data user' and 'computer bureau'. For the sake of brevity the book introduces a new term 'computer user' which should be taken to encompass both of the above.
