Teletex is a communication standard which allows users to exchange documents electronically. The teletex services now being implemented enable users to prepare text documents on, for example, word processors and to transmit them via a public network to the recipient.;The author explores the development of teletex, discusses CCITT requirements, the use of networks, the teletex protocol and other aspects.;Particular attention is given to the UK Teletex Service with reference to implementation schedules, BT involvement and the role of suppliers. International developments are charted (a table shows service start dates for 22 countries), with details included of the intentions of particular countries. Particular attention is given to implentation in Germany and Sweden.;Implementation aspects are discussed in the context of the needs of both small and large organisations, and specific case studies are included (Siemens, Mitsubishi). Details are also included of equipment, costs, and staffing and future possibilities.
