The mechanisms underlying human immunoglobulin variable gene expression are poorly understood. For instance, certain immunoglobulin variable gene segments are preferentially used both during early development and in various autoimmune disorders and B-cell neoplasms. This volume addresses topics - such as human immunoglobulin gene organisation, rearrangement, transcription and somatic mutation, and B-cell and immunoglobulin gene repertoire development - selected for their relevance to the interpretation of the multitude of human immunoglobulin gene studies in the normal B-cell repertoire and in various B-cell disorders.
