Since the first successful transplantation of human tumour tissue into thymus-aplastic nude mice in 1969, the role of immunodeficient animals in oncology has continuously increased. This volume summarizes the current status of scientific work with immunodeficient mice in oncology. Special focus is placed on the following areas:;The establishment and characterization of human tumour xenografts in experimental animals as well as the quality control and monitoring of the transplants.;Tumor biology studies on nude mice, presenting data on tumour-host interactions, growth regulation by oncogenes, growth factors and hormones, as well as tumour markers and heterogeneity.;The use of SCID mice in oncology and tumour immunology.;New drug development strategies of the National Cancer Institute of the United States and the European Organization on Research and Treatment of Cancer. Data on various new compounds are presented, including analogues of classical cytostatics, growth factor and hormone antagonists, compounds converting tumour resistance, biological response modifiers and natural products.
