Publisher's Synopsis
This volume contains contributions presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Smart Structures and Structronic Systems, held in Madeburg Germany, 26-29 September 2000. Synergistic integration of smart materials, structures, sensors, actuators and control electronics has redefined the concept of structures from a conventional passive elastic system to an active controllable structronic (structure plus electronic) system with inherent self-sensing, diagnosis, and control capabilities. The Symposium focused on the fundamental mechanics and electromechanics of structures and structronic systems, including smart materials, sensors, actuators, and control electronics. This book represents the symposium highlights, and consists of 43 papers presented by distinguished scientists from 15 countries. The editors sincerely hope that the book will serve as a milestone in this emerging field and further promote the technology in both scientific research and practical applications of structronic systems.
