Publisher's Synopsis
With poems from reflections on our essential humanity, thoughts and feelings that are representatively presented in lyrical form, this book is for natural readers.
It is a poetry book packed with lyrics on themes of love, romance, metaphysics, society, politics, history, sentiments, et al. It presents poems written over a lengthy space of time, from 1991 to 2022.
It is a classic fact that literature is epitome of life. An art, which reflects humanity, both in its simplicity and complexity, and in- between. It mirrors how man interprets life. This is why the main tool of literature is language; because, it is through words, mainly, that man represents himself and his inner self to the outside world. And for such reason, literature has been culturally characterized, such as American, English, European, African, literatures. It is an art which connects man of all climes.
Literature uses techniques such as Device, Figure, Symbolism, Repetition and Allegory; i.e figures of Speech, Comparison, Association, Contrast, etc, to deliver its impact and purpose. These figures, devices, etc, are used in this book to create effects while delivering messages on love, sentiments, history, life after death, etc. Pathos is used in the poems on immortality, love and tribute. Ethos is used in the poems on HIV, society and politics. There is a good amount use of imagery and repetition across the poems.
This poetry tries to go back, as much as possible, to the ancient Greece, from where, as it has been held, the art of poetry was transmitted to the western culture. The ancient Greek poetry was usually filled with emotions. Some of the poems in this book are, likewise, delivered with emotions.
Generally, the poetry in this book is different from what is common of the modern poetry. Modern poetry sometimes read like prose broken into verses; whereas the poems in this book behave in terms of classical and post-classical poetry. Their verses are verses, and not prose. Through the use of abstracted and representative imagery, real issues of life and real world are summoned into readers' minds, who are, thereby, induced to launch their own imaginative and interpretational skill and ability. This stimulates intellect, which can be mentally refreshing.
This book has a quick-read tribute to Queen Elizabeth II; tributes to some of Nigerian modern time heroes, and a poem in honour of a Nigerian martyr, a slain Christian girl, who, subsequently, was honoured post-humously by the US Department of State.
The general theme of this book is 'Humanity'; and it is titled 'Immortality' because, 'immortality' is the ultimate value of humanity. The setting is Nigeria. Its purpose is historical reminiscence and contemporaneous reflections woven around basic sentiments(sadness, anguish, sympathy, subtle anger, etc), nature of society, politics, metaphysics, tribute, love and romance.
The poems reflect from 'Sound and Time' in a developing society. Each of the poems has its own deep meaning. They are "Rhythms of the tides" in a sense that the poet was under the influence of the ambiance of each poem; that is, each poem is a response to the feelings in particular situation of each poem, from the naturality of man. Some of the poems may even give a sense of Déjà vu.
This collection of poems is a window into a struggling humanity. Buyers can find in it materials for songs, as well as quotations on love, life, death, life after death, tribute, etc, which may be useful in gift cards, speeches and presentations. It can be read for pleasure in leisure. Like classical poetry, the book helps to relax stressed minds; because it is a classic.
