Although a short time only has elapsed since -the publication of the fourth edition of this work, the labours of physiologists have been so nume rous, diversified, and important, as to demand material modifications and additions in the present edition. No little time and industry have been bestowed by the author to introduce these, and to digest the various mate rials contained in the ex professo treatises, as well as in the different periodi cals of this country and of Europe. Histology' and histogeny properly, perhaps, belong to works on anatomy; but these have been so much culti yated by recent physiologists, so extensively introduced' into physiological works, and have such an important bearing on the doctrine of the functions, that, although the author has not treated of them in extenso, he has endea voured to bestow upon them due attention.
