Publisher's Synopsis
This is a revised and combined edition of the two carpentry tool-making manuals "How to Make Twelve Woodworking Tools" and "How to Make Planes, Cramps and Vices". It describes in detail how to make the wooden parts of a range of carpentry tools, including squares, gauges, clamps and planes. Directions for construction and use of the tools are in the form of step-by-step illustrations, backed up by short captions.;Based on experiences in East Africa, the tools described here have been developed to be made in situations where money is not available to equip a workshop with expensive Western tools. Appropriate for large training institutions, the tools can also be used in small village workshops where the artisans can make tools as and when they are needed. Small-scale tool-making production units can also be set up to supply schools and colleges in the surrounding area. The aim is to assist carpenters and joiners of all descriptions to acquire the tools they need to practise their trade.;This updated manual incorporates quicker and easier construction methods (devised since the original books were published) and should offer some guidelines for those who intend to introduce carpentry tool-making into their projects. It is aimed at three main groups of people: field workers helping to develop small-scale rural businesses; volunteers from European agencies with technical postings in developing countries; and carpentry instructors working in vocational or technical teacher training institutions.
