ICONnect, a technology initiative of AASL, is designed to get students, library media specialists and teachers connected to learning to use the Internet. This booklet is the first printed release in a series of progressive, strategic resources that build a bridge of support to connect learners to information.;Every day, in schools throughout the US, library media specialists help millions of K-12 students to find and use information for school and personal needs. ICONnect provides the training and support that foster effective Internet navigation skills which lead to development of the crucial information and visual literacy skills. The initiative has five components: Gopher and Home Page; Internet curriculum advisors; on-line courses; mini-grants; and KidsConnect, an on-line question-and-answer service for students.;User-friendly booklets, such as this one, complement the initiative by providing printed, progressive information that brings school library media specialists and other K-12 educators step-by-step toward a full-blown integration of Internet resources into the curriculum. This booklet focuses on Internet use skills for "newbies", including: how to get connected; rules of conduct; how the Internet works; how to send e-mail, to Telnet, to Gopher; what is FTP and how to use it; what is World Wide Web; and other essentials.
