Publisher's Synopsis

Samuel Roberts Wells (1820-1875) was a renowned phrenologist and author. He met the Fowler brothers Lorenzo Niles Fowler (1811-1896) and Orson Squire Fowler (1809-1887) during a lecture tour in 1843 and joined them as an assistant. In 1844, he married their sister, Charlotte Fowler, herself a pioneer phrenologist. The same year he became a member of the phrenological firm and publishing house of O. S. & L. N. Fowler, which was then known as Fowler and Wells, in New York City. After Lorenzo Fowler removed to England, Wells was the sole proprietor. They founded the American Phrenological Journal and Life Illustrated, a monthly Fowler and Wells publication. His works include: How to Do Business: A Pocket Manual of Practical Affairs (1857), How to Behave: A Pocket Manual of Republican Etiquette (1857), The Farm: A Pocket Manual of Practical Agriculture (1858), New Physiognomy; or, Signs of Character (1868), Wells' New Descriptive Chart for the Use of Examiners: Giving a Delineation of the Character, According to Phrenology and Physiognomy (1869) and How to Read Character: A New Illustrated Hand-Book of Phrenology and Physiognomy (1874).
