Sometimes they use tea grounds or a pack of cards to assist in "casting your horiscope." Again they use palmistry to assist in deluding their victims. Fraternizing with these you will find the matrimonial agents. These run the gamut from the neighborhood matchmaker to the scheming (I should say "villian" if speaking of a man. Is there such a word as "villianess?") person whose schemes are great enough and frauds daring enough to land her in the penitentiary. There are many engaged in the sale of spurious preparations called cosmetics that really are pernicious and injurious. Others prey upon their sex with medical nostrums that are highly objectionable and cause worse troubles than they are represented as a panacea for. The Y. W. C. A. is doing a great work. Not alone by counsel and advice. Not merely the Sabbath meetings and yearly or semi-yearly councils, but also by practical instruction given in many ways by which girls and women may make their living and by helping them to find desirable positions. How very much good Christian work there is done. Helping some one to help themselves is the greatest kindness of all. The deaconesses in many cities are using excellent influences that are not only reclaiming those who stray from the right path, but are protecting the virtuous and the weak from evil influences that might assail them.
