The work of writing this book was eased by Addie's kindness in introducing me to the War museum'.The author had been granted an O.B.E. for her service during the War - when her journalistic duties included providing thrifty recipes in Lord Northcliffe's Daily Mail, and touring the country to give talks on household economy during these extreme circumstances. With food rationing in force, she was co-director of women's service for the Ministry of Food in 1917 and 1918. After the war she was on the Committee of the Women's Pioneer Housing association founded by Ray Strachey, Lady Rhondda, et al.
