How much of this ancestral legacy do we still hold onto?
The answer is certainly a substantial amount, and that is largely due to our limbic system or our "old mammalian brain". Regardless of how much we have developed as individuals or civilization and society have in general, we still cannot fully escape the influence these primitive brain structures have over us.
However, we still learn a lot from our environment. Larger more conscious movements and mannerisms of the limbs can be culturally rooted. That is why it's important to assess the contextual cues first and foremost. This starts with assessing the cues which are likely to trigger certain behavioral traits. These can be both external and internal but will always be the subsequent driver of the proceeding behavior.
The next thing to watch out for is the changes, the sequences of signals which allow you to pick up on mood more easily. Large shifts in body language displays will almost always occur in clusters or in a grouping of mannerisms, allowing you to much more reliably pick up on these changes when they occur.
The fourth consideration is regarding the character and culture of the individual or group of people you are assessing. As I mention, the subconscious cues are almost always the same within everyone, but the larger and more overt body movements and gestures can be very much interpersonal, depending on somebody's upbringing and background. Try to assess for their baseline behavior and adjust your thinking either way.
Context can play a huge role in accurately assessing the momentary behavior of others, and credence should certainly be given to the situational settings you find yourself in. Discount any contextual etiquette within formal and business settings for instance. These factors shouldn't be the only lens by which you are assessing somebody's intention with regards to their body language, but considerations that would be wise to take on board, nonetheless.
However, analyzing people isn't just about mannerisms and gestures. You still have to pay attention to the words these people are choosing to use. Care must be taken here as language can be a great mask for intention. However, you can still deduce a great deal about a person's mindset if you know what you are looking for within their vocabulary.
This will come down to the adjectives and describing words the person chooses to use. The emphasis they place on the base nouns and verbs within their sentences to accentuate meaning. This will show much about their current mindset.
