Publisher's Synopsis
Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Social Pedagogy / Social Work, grade: 85%, Murdoch University (Murdoch University), course: Gender and Development, language: English, abstract: Violence against women (VAW) is a complex phenomenon driven by factors at the level of the individual woman, the perpetrator, the relationship and family, the community, and the society. It is acknowledged as a world public health and human rights challenge that requires immediate attention. Because VAW can occur at individual, family, community and state levels, efforts to affectively address it must involve a multi-dimensional approach at various levels of governance. The deeply rooted norms and beliefs underlying patriarchal powers, including their extensiveness across institutions, means that effective strategies to deal with it should operate at varying fronts and in a comprehensive way. This essay, therefore, contends that interventions to address VAW should engage multi-dimensional methods that provide interventions at individual, interpersonal, community and national levels. The essay will first discuss the definition and context of VAW, prevalence, causes and effects of VAW. The essay will then proceed to discuss strategies under three broad categories that should be employed in addressing VAW. These categories include preventive measures to stop the perpetuation of VAW; support services to victims of VAW; and programmes targeting perpetrators of VAW. The essay will then conclude with a summary of the interventions of dealing with VAW.
