Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Hoste as an Index of Style in the Orators: A Dissertation, Presented to the Board of University Studies of the John Hopkins University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, June, 1898
If there is anything suggestive in these statistics of average occurrence, it seems to me to be the marked avoidance of (23076 in the orators following Lysias and Isocrates, as compared with the usage of these two authors. We might conceive of a certain re-action against a use of the particle which had come to be noted as excessive and approaching a mannerism. Such a view would receive some support from results noted in the latest works of Isocrates himself.
