The protagonist roams an ethereal place known as The Honeycomb. There, he meets John, a spiritual entity, who informs him he has been given the chance of choosing his next life from a menu of five possible existences. Coached by quirky insights from John's mystical anecdotes, the protagonist previews the lives of a tycoon whose materialism blinds him to the love of his girlfriend; a Native-American hermit whose simple existence is disrupted by an obsessive quest of redemption; an enigmatic woman driven to self-discovery; a widowed man quixotically trying to save his terminally ill daughter; and a man who endures an unexpected and harrowing desert adventure.
