Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Homiletical and Pastoral Lectures: Delivered in St. Paul's Cathedral Before the Church Homilectical Society
The following Lectures were delivered, at various periods during the past five years, before the Church Homiletical society, either in the Chapter Room or the Trophy Room of St. Paul's Cathedral. The useful Society, before the members 'of which the lectureswere delivered, was established'in March 1874, and owed its origin to a smalllgathering of London clergymen, who met together in the autumn of the preceding year to consider the best means of raising the standard of preaching, especially among, younger men. It was felt that the need for such a movement was real, and even urgent, but it appeared to be very doubtful how that'need could best be supplied. It was ultimately agreed that a short and tentative course of lectures on preaching should be delivered. Invitations were sent out to all the clergy of London and the suburbs, and'to' others.
